Mobile games becoming SF’s hottest tech industry (as seen in SFbay.ca)

A few years ago casual online gaming exploded with Zynga’s Farmville and similar social network games, but within the last two years America has become fixated on their mobile devices and the games on them. During that same time, San Francisco’s social gaming industry has been morphing to accommodate the new portable pastimes. Many factors played a part in this, one being the bar has become so high for social network games to have better interactions and graphics that development … Continue reading

In the light of the “Nimblebit incident,” Zynga and King John have a lot in common…or do they?

We’ve all seen Disney’s version of Robin Hood and how annoying King John was sucking his thumb while rationalizing that stealing everything from his citizens was okay. That bratty lion would take his citizen’s life savings for his own use, such as stuffing his mattress and pillows with bags of gold coins before bed. Robin Hood had to swoop in and put a stop to King John taking advantage of the innocent victims in Nottingham. How does this have anything … Continue reading

EA’s The Sims Medieval: LOVE IT.

I heard a rumor that EA was nervous about how fans of The Sims 3 would receive their latest release, The Sims Medieval. I was an avid player of The Sims 3. I spent my hard earned money on furniture and decorations that I would never touch or even see outside my 15-inch Macbook Pro screen. I used graph paper to make blueprints of the homes I would create and I would use cheat codes to get the money I … Continue reading

CARTOON: “So you want to work in the video game industry…”

I thought I’d share this video because it’s a common misconception many people have about working in the video game industry. It takes a lot of time and effort to make the most minimal game, let alone a best seller. In an interview I did recently with a game designer I asked if working at a major gaming company was anything like the movie “Grandma’s Boy.” He of course said it was not anything like that, and urged people not … Continue reading

Flash Game Development: There’s a lot more to it than you think

I have had many people tell me that I should develop flash games. My childish doodles are those commonly found in some of the less serious flash games, such as Wake the Royalty. I never really gave the idea much thought until I began this blog. So I dove into the subject and found it takes a lot more time and money than you would think to get your game up on the internet and playable for your audience. Where … Continue reading

Photo slideshow of FGS 2011

Here are a few photos from the 2011 FGS. Unfortunately, I didn’t catch the tail end of it because I heard Notch from Minecraft was over at Moscone Center getting ready for GDC, which takes place all next week. Of course I wanted to try and get an interview with him! Around the time of this discovery some developers were headed over to GDC to setup. So I hitched a cab ride over to Moscone with a guy and tried … Continue reading

Welcome to my castle

Flash games are like an internet sitcom: They’ll entertain you for 15-60 minutes…you’ll remember that you enjoyed and possibly tell your friends about it, but you can never remember the punchline of the joke (or ending of the game)…just that it was really awesome and they should watch (or play) too. Continue reading
